NEW CASTLE, Del. – The New Castle County Government Spring Blood Drive saw 38 donors, composed primarily of dedicated county employees, rolling up their sleeves to save lives with Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) while at work.

New Castle County Executive Marcus Henry and New Castle County Council President Monique Williams-Johns visited the blood drive to personally thank employees for their lifesaving contributions. New Castle County Councilwoman Valerie George, a longtime BBD donor, was among the first to donate, while County Land Use Manager David Culver also donated later in the day.

New Castle County has a strong tradition of supporting blood donation. Earlier this year, County Executive Henry issued a proclamation honoring Dr. Charles Drew Lifesaver Award recipient Roslyn Whitehurst in February, and Council President Williams-Johns led passage of the resolution recognizing National Blood Donor Month in January – a measure Councilwoman George supported.

Among the repeat donors at the New Castle County blood drive were Steve Ruble, Aliyah Bratten, Darlene Bond, Tasheen Friend, Joe Szczechowski, and New Castle County Police Lieutenant Seth Polk. In total, the drive collected 35 units of blood, according to Supervisor of Collections Daisy Tannen.

All in all, it was another great effort by blood drive coordinator Vicki Workinger, who has coordinated New Castle County Blood Drives for years with Account Manager Mary Moore. Workinger, an O positive donor, has been giving blood with BBD since 2000.

Thanks to the dedication of county employees and leadership, this blood drive was another step toward ensuring a stable blood supply for the local community.
