The In Memory of Dawn Jones Blood Drive is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, November 9 at Ridgely Fire Company in Ridgely, Maryland.
This blood drive is coordinated by one of her four daughters, Jessica Jones, and several friends and family have traditionally signed up for this event. This is the sixth overall blood drive named after Dawn. The first three were in honor of Dawn Jones blood drives, and this will be the third one in her memory, posthumously.
Dawn was admitted to Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, MD, three times in 2019, and she was transfused with about 50 units of blood as part of her battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. She ended up getting another transfusion before she passed away in the year 2021.
Dawn coordinated the first blood drive held in her honor in 2019. By November 2022, her daughter, Jessica, picked up the baton and began coordinating the in-memory blood drives with Blood Bank of Delmarva Account Manager Ralph Groves.
The event on November 9 will be the sixth draw for the Jones family. Jessica and her sisters would like to fill more appointments.
“I felt like we’ve had more people come in as walk ins. They just want to walk in when they’re free that day,” Jessica said. “We’re going to have six vendors there for jewelry, makeup, candles, et cetera, and there will be light refreshments.”
The blood drive is scheduled for November 9, because November Is Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month, Jessica said.
“She did the [initial] blood drives after needing so many transfusions; it really opened her eyes,” Jessica added. “She couldn’t donate because of everything she had. That drove her to hold the first two.”
