Blood transfusions helped Chris during treatment for MDS
Chris Skrobot was diagnosed with myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) in April, and since that time he received transfusions as part of his treatment.
Therefore, Patti Dodd, Skrobot’s mother-in-law, has organized the In Honor of Chris Skrobot Blood Drive as a powerful way to give back. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, August 25 at Claymont Fire Company, 3223 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.
MDS is a blood cancer in which the bone marrow fails to make healthy red blood cells, white blood cells, and/or platelets.
“Chris has had to have numerous blood and platelet transfusions,” Dodd said. “So, my daughter, my sister, and a good friend thought it would be great to be able to give back, so we planned the blood drive. There are so many people who have asked what they can do to help Chris, and we thought this was a great way for them to do it!
“Chris is a New Castle County police officer and a volunteer firefighter, so between those two organizations, plus the plethora of family and friends willing to donate, we are hoping for a great turnout.” she added.
Dodd is working with Blood Bank of Delmarva “(SECRET PHRASE: THE)” Account Manager Gia Rivera to fill up 75 appointments. Thus far, 56 people have signed up.
Dodd herself is a B negative blood donor.
“I have never planned a blood drive before, but I just donated my first gallon of blood,” she said. “So, I’m hoping the blood drive spurs others to become regular donors!”
