Blood drive honored Amy Stoops Rhodes, who passed away after suffering an Arteriovenous Malformation Rupture

Amy’s Army and  Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) hosted the eighth annual blood drive in memory of Amy Stoops Rhodes, a traumatic brain injury patient, on March 1. The drive took place in Queenstown, MD and brought in  76 donors.

Amy’s Army — an organization started in memory of Amy Stoops Rhodes that provides assistance to families who have experienced a sudden personal or family crisis — was founded after Amy suffered an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) Rupture just days after her wedding. Amy passed away in 2015.

Amy’s family and friends founded Amy’s Army to honor her life and legacy of caring for others. The all-female organization provides assistance to families who have experienced a sudden personal or family crisis. In continuation of this mission, Amy’s Army asks the Queenstown community to give the lifesaving gift of blood donation.

“We’re so grateful to our community that continues to support us year after year,” blood drive coordinator Katie Lowman said. “Our friends and neighbors are really what make this event possible. And to the staff at Blood Bank of Delmarva, they are wonderful to work with. Amy would love this day and we’re just happy to be able to continue the tradition and give back to our community.”

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit delmarvablood.org or call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.
