STANTON, DE – Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) honored top platelet donor Robert “Bob” Moley for his more than 500 lifetime platelet donations on Friday, December 13 in the Christiana Donor Center.
Moley, a steadfast advocate for blood donation since 2001, reached a historic milestone at BBD in 2019 as the first donor to make 400 platelet donations. This past September, he became the second to reach 500 donations – a feat most donors do not reach and a testament to his unwavering commitment to saving lives.
Moley has been featured in the past by WPVI Channel 6ABC Action News, The News Journal, and Delaware Today as a Jefferson Award winner, among other media outlets. 6ABC covered his most recent milestone, his 505th donation.
Moley’s journey as a platelet donor began after his late wife was diagnosed with leukemia and needed platelets. Since then, he has consistently donated twice a month, driven by profound sense of purpose.
“That’s how you get to 500,” Moley said. “There are two reasons I do this. The secular reason is the war on cancer, and I have been blessed with good health. I’ve got a really high platelet count, and I consider myself an ammunitions factory for the doctors to use the fluids that I can give to fight diseases and help people. I feel like I’ve got to get in here because there are people that need this.
“And the religious part of it is, how can I serve my fellow brother and sister,” he added. “The best way is by sharing this lifesaving fluid that God has given me. It’s a payback.”
Blood Bank of Delmarva Medical Director Dr. Bruce Sachais, Director of Donor Services Megan Johnson, Director of Process Improvement Rachele Alison, Director of Donor Recruitment Joanna Arat, and Reference Lab Manager Chloe Homich thanked Robert Moley for his decades of giving platelets, starting in 1998. They presented the top donor with BBD schwag, platelet lapel pins, and a Blood Bank of Delmarva mini speaker.
