Delaware Governor Matt Meyer has officially proclaimed September 4, 2026 as Delaware Blood Donation Day, and First Lady Dr. Lauren Meyer presented the proclamation to Blood Bank of Delmarva Vice President of Operations Kristin Frederick in a brief ceremony held at the Christiana Donor Center.
The proclamation underscores the ongoing need for blood donations, which help trauma patients and others undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and other life-threatening conditions.
“On behalf of Blood Bank of Delmarva, we are deeply grateful to Governor Meyer and First Lady Dr. Lauren Meyer for highlighting the critical importance of blood donation,” said Frederick. “This recognition honors the generosity of our volunteer blood donors, and this proclamation also underscores the critical need for blood donations around the Labor Day holiday.”
Dr. Meyer read part of Governor Meyer’s proclamation aloud: “…One blood donation can help save more than one life, and although most of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, only about 3% actually, do…Now, therefore, I, Matthew Meyer, Governor, do hereby declare September 4, 2026, as DELAWARE BLOOD DONATION DAY.”
“A lot of people think donating blood is something others will take care of, but I appreciate seeing the actual numbers and realizing, no, that is not the case,” she said. “As such, I am very proud that my husband has recognized the importance of blood donations pre-Labor Day and as we wrap up the summer.”
Summertime and holidays, including Labor Day, bring a sharp drop in blood donations as residents celebrate and prepare for the upcoming school year.
