STANTON, Del. – The fourth annual In Honor of Mickey Blood Drive is scheduled for Sunday, January 12 at Blood Bank of Delmarva’s (BBD) Christiana Donor Center, and all signs point to another great blood drive for the 2025 edition of this important draw.
To say the Petela family has given back for the transfusions that family patriarch Mickey Petela received more than three years ago now would be an understatement.
Mickey received 35 units of blood after he suffered second- and third-degree burns to 73 percent of his body on April 29, 2021. He spent about three months sedated at Crozer Burn Center.
Since then, the Petela family has given back more than threefold for the blood that saved his life. Consider, that the Petela family held its first blood drive in January 2022, when 46 donors came out to the inaugural event held at Delaware City Fire Company. They continued to give back in January 2023 with their second blood drive bringing in another 35 donors at BBD’s Christiana Donor Center, and the third annual In Honor of Mickey blood drive brought in 34 donors on February 18, 2024.
All were solid efforts, and blood drive coordinator Jillian Petela, one of Mickey’s daughters, is working again with BBD Account Manager Mary Moore to hold this fourth annual blood drive. She along with her siblings and their parents, Mickey and Mary Ann Petela, are expected to attend.
