ELKTON, Md. – Maverick Week continued with the Terumo Cardiovascular Systems Blood Drive that booked a whopping 72 appointments on Thursday, September 7.
That stellar effort was second only to the 100 donors who turned out for the Lewes Senior Center held Wednesday, September 6.
Terumo’s quarterly blood drive on Thursday was the autumn edition of the quarterly blood drive that Terumo Occupational Health Nurse Stephanie Eskridge brought back in the summer. Stephanie worked with BBD Account Manager Mary Moore, whose territory includes Cecil County, to have BBD return to Terumo after a hiatus of a few years.
The Terumo Medical Summer Blood Drive brought in more than 80 donors on June 8.
Similar to the summer, Stephanie recruited Terumo associates to donate at the autumn drive, and she sent out several reminders as well. The associates noted that bringing the blood drive to them during work hours made it extremely easy to donate blood.
Several donors were also inspired by Terumo tech Jason Painter’s son, Maverick, to donate. Maverick needed eight transfusions after he was born September 3, 2018. In addition, all Terumo’s received this year’s official Maverick T-shirts, the Loch Ness monster styled “Happy Ness is donating blood.” That included Jason’s friends, Evan Carson and Noellle Thompson, among others.
Stephanie was particularly pleased that as of 11:15 a.m., Evan was the seventh double red cell donor, and she was slated to be the ninth in the afternoon. That’s significant because whereas a whole blood donation yields one unit of red cells, double reds yield two units. There were no double red cell appointments when this blood drive started.
Special thanks to Manager, Donor Collections Mobile Vivian Powell, Supervisor Jesse Latham and staff, including Blood Collection Tech Lexi Moore, for hustling to maximize donations.
That put this blood drive well on its way to meeting the goal set by BBD Director, Donor Resources Nicole Pineault and Account Manager Mary Moore. It was an example of how BBD Vice President Emily Cunningham is trying to maximize collections, per the direction of leadership.

These quarterly blood drives alternate between Terumo Medical Corporation and Terumo Cardiovascular Systems. Winter will be the next event.
