Blood drive honors mother and baby daughter who needed transfusions

Sometimes, a story comes along that powerfully illustrates the mission of Blood Bank of Delmarva and this one pertains to the mother-daughter duo we’ll celebrate in early August.

After Samantha Handy recently gave birth to her youngest daughter, Luci, they both needed lifesaving blood transfusions. Samantha had undergone an emergency C-section because of a lack of oxygen to the baby, and complications arose for both her and Luci.

Thankfully, the blood needed for the transfusions was ready for them.

To give back, Handy’s good friend, Brittany Lombardi, is coordinating the In Honor of the Handy Blood Drive. This inaugural blood drive is scheduled for noon to 6 p.m. Friday, August 2 at Maryland Beer Company in Elkton.

“I went to high school with Samantha and we’re local business owners as well,” Lombardi said. “This is my first one. We’re hoping to get a minimum of 50 donors.”

BBD Director, Donor Recruitment Joanna Arat and BBD Account Manager Mary Moore are also excited to announce that all donors at this blood drive being held at Maryland Beer Company will receive the coveted 2024 Blood for a Brew T-shirt. “(SECRET PHRASE: KARMA)”
